Fault Finding And Diagnostics

When your lighting controls stop behaving as expected, every hour of disruption matters. We find the problem quickly, explain what has gone wrong and fix it properly.

Lighting control faults are rarely simple. A zone that will not respond, a scene that behaves inconsistently, or emergency lighting that fails its test can each have multiple root causes, many of which are not visible to a standard electrician without specialist knowledge of DALI protocol and digital control systems.
We are specialists, not generalists. When something is wrong with a lighting control system, we arrive with the tools, the software and the diagnostic knowledge to identify what it is, explain it clearly and put it right. We also document what we have done so the building record reflects the actual state of the system.

Problems We Resolve

From zones that will not respond to emergency lighting that fails its test, lighting control faults range from straightforward to seriously complex.

We investigate and resolve a wide range of lighting control issues: DALI addressing conflicts and bus collisions, failed or misbehaving drivers, corrupted programming, occupancy and daylight sensor drift, keypad and scene controller faults, loss of communication between devices, and systems that have been incorrectly commissioned and never worked properly.
We also handle the more complex cases: systems that have been modified by multiple parties over the years, installations where the original commissioning documentation no longer reflects what is actually installed, and buildings where lighting control problems are affecting compliance obligations rather than just convenience.

DALI Diagnostics

DALI gives us a level of diagnostic visibility that other protocols do not. We know how to read what it is telling us and act on it.

Using specialist DALI tools and commissioning software, we can interrogate a lighting control network in detail: checking bus voltage and current, identifying addressing conflicts, verifying group assignments, confirming device types and isolating failed or non-communicating devices. This level of diagnostic depth is not possible without both the right tools and the experience to interpret what they report.
We work with a wide range of DALI systems and platforms, which means we are not limited in our diagnostic capability by the system type. Whether the installation uses Helvar, WAGO, Zencontrol, Tridonic or another DALI-compatible platform, we can investigate effectively.

Emergency Lighting Failures

An emergency lighting failure during a test is a compliance problem. Left unresolved, it is a safety problem.

Emergency lighting failures can have multiple causes: failed batteries, defective control gear, wiring faults, incorrect test schedules or system configuration errors. Identifying which requires a methodical investigation of both the physical installation and the control system configuration.
We carry out emergency lighting diagnostic visits, produce written reports identifying what has failed and why, and carry out the remedial work needed to bring the system back into compliance. Where automated testing via DALI-2 emergency gear is possible, we can also implement and configure it to reduce the manual burden on facilities teams going forward.

What We Deliver

A clear diagnosis, a plain explanation of what has gone wrong and the capability to carry out the work needed to put things right.

Our fault finding service can include an initial site assessment, a written diagnostic report, remedial works, programming corrections, full or partial recommissioning, and updated documentation reflecting the corrected state of the system.
We also offer an ongoing diagnostic retainer for buildings where recurring issues suggest the system needs more than a one-off visit. This can be combined with a planned maintenance programme to provide continuous, proactive oversight of lighting control performance.

Common Questions

Questions buyers regularly ask about lighting control fault finding.

Why are some of our lights "flickering" or sticking at 100%?
This is often a sign of a DALI bus fault or a failing driver. When a DALI device loses its signal, it usually defaults to 100% (System Failure Level) for safety.
What tools do you use for diagnostics?
We use specialized DALI bus sniffers and manufacturer-independent software to analyze the network traffic and identify the exact device or cable segment causing the issue.
Can you fix a fault on a proprietary system I can't get parts for?
While some systems are "locked," we can often find a DALI-compatible bridge or replacement that allows us to restore functionality without needing proprietary manufacturer parts.

Get in Touch

Got a lighting control system that is not behaving as it should? We will find out exactly what is wrong.

You do not need to have a full diagnosis before you contact us. Describe what the system is doing, which platform it is, and how long the problem has been present. We will take it from there.
